extensions 101: switching salons with existing extensions
No matter the circumstance or reason, switching salons or stylists can feel like taking a big leap of faith and when you add in the complexity of being a long or short-term extension wearer, the process can feel even murkier.
And transparently, it’s a leap of faith for us too.
So, what are we considering when accepting new clients with existing extensions? Let’s break it down.
Method Matters
First, let’s address the elephant in the room … many salons won’t accept clients wearing other hair or methods.
Our philosophy leans more nuanced. We understand new clients with existing extensions come in for many different reasons; moving to new area, challenges with their previous stylist’s availability, dissatisfaction with their current look etc.
That said, we tend to accept new clients who wear wefts (machine, genius, or hand-tied) or Keratin Bonds (K-Tips).
K-Tips
Often the easiest transition for both client and stylist, these appointments focus on either replacing current k-tips completely, looking to add more, or potentially retipping the current bonds.
Bringing your own K-tip hair extensions? While we are happy to consider working with existing hair, please note that it can sometimes add unexpected complications to your service (including price).
Using outside hair can be challenging because:
Quality + Brand: We may not be familiar with the brand or hair quality.
Bond Compatibility: The pre-bonded tips might differ from the specific tools and techniques we use.
Quantity: There may not be enough hair on hand to achieve your desired look.
If you plan to bring your own hair, we simply ask for your flexibility. We want to ensure the best possible results and may need to adjust your service accordingly!
Wefts
For new clients wearing existing wefts, there are a few things to keep in mind that may affect your service length and pricing:
Density + Placement
Sometimes, the density of your existing extensions won't perfectly match your natural hair or head shape. This typically happens if the previous layout wasn't customized for you, or if there isn't quite enough hair to blend properly.
To ensure we achieve the high-quality results we expect and give you a look you love, you may need to purchase additional hair during your appointment.
Color Match + Cut
Custom color is our bread and butter here at LB Extensions (insert hair flip). While we love providing custom luxury extensions, blending them flawlessly is where the magic happens. More often than not, new clients with existing wefts require color touch-ups along with a tailored trim to ensure everything blends absolutely seamlessly.
Unfortunately, there are cases in which working with your existing extensions won’t be possible. This mostly happens when the existing extension hair is failing apart and can’t be rehabbed.
